چکیده
The study presented here uses data from the NORC General Social Surveys to explore the effects of measurable school characteristics on student achievement. What separates this study from many others is the use of aggregate data on older cohorts, usually associated with research on the influence of school inputs on earnings. We fmd substantively large effects, similar in size to those found in many earnings-focused studies. Our results point to the importance of aggregation in modeling the relationship between school inputs and student outcomes, bringing into question causal interpretations of the results of studies using aggregate data to assess school input effects.

Trends in the genetic influences on smoking.
Using twin pairs from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States, we estimate that 35 percent of the variance in regular smoking is due to additive genetic influences. When we disaggregate the sample by birth cohort we witness strong genetic influences on smoking for those born in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1950s, but negligible influences for those born in the 1940s and 1960s. ...
متن کاملSES Disparities in Obesity, Diabetes, and Hypertension among Older Adults in Low and Middle Income Countries
Low and middle income countries experienced rapid demographic changes and increased life expectancy during the 1930s-1960s, mainly because of public health interventions and medical innovations. Increasingly larger groups of survivors of poor early life conditions continued to live in poor socioeconomic conditions which continued to produce a stunted population. Older adults from these cohorts ...

OBJECTIVE Little is known about the prevalence of child obesity in the US before the first national survey in 1963. There is disagreement about whether the obesity epidemic is entirely a recent phenomenon or a continuation of longstanding trends. DESIGN AND METHODS The BMIs of 1,116 children who participated in the Fels Longitudinal Study near Dayton, Ohio were analyzed. Children were born be...
متن کاملThe Role of Hydrofluorocarbons in Global Fire Protection: an Update
HISTORIC[1] Halogenated compounds have been employed as fire extinguishing agents since the early 1900s, when handheld extinguishers containing carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) were first introduced. In the late 1920s, methyl bromide (CH3Br) was found to be more effective than carbon tetrachloride, and was widely used as a fire extinguishing agent by the British in the late 1930s for aircraft protec...
متن کاملTrends in smoking and lung cancer mortality in Japan, by birth cohort, 1949-2010.
OBJECTIVE To determine smoking trends in Japan in comparison with lung cancer mortality. METHODS Age-specific smoking prevalence among cohorts born between 1897 and 1985 were determined for the period 1949-2010. The percentages of the cohorts born between 1893 and 1979 who initiated smoking early (e.g. before the age of 20 years) were determined. The results were compared against lung cancer ...
